The Lems Outlander is worth comparing if you want a waterproof boot with a roomy forefoot and a zero-drop platform. Those features describe a design, not a guarantee of comfort or suitability for every hiker. Choose by fit, terrain, and your familiarity with the footwear style rather than an “every adventure” claim.

Lems Outlander Boots: understand the published design
The men’s Outlander page lists a nylon-and-leather upper, waterproof membrane lining, gusseted tongue, zero drop, 16 mm stack height, and 4 mm outsole lugs. It lists 14.7 ounces for men’s size 10. That reference size should not be treated as the weight of every size or women’s version.
| Feature | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Roomy forefoot | Do toes have space without the heel sliding? |
| Zero-drop platform | Does this suit the footwear you comfortably use now? |
| Waterproof construction | Does your route favor this over a different drying strategy? |
| Lugged sole | Is the actual grip appropriate to your surfaces? |
A wider toe area is only one part of fit. Heel security, midfoot volume, sock thickness, and how the boot bends all matter. A specification cannot establish how it will feel on your foot.
Fit it with the socks and load you will use
Try both boots with your intended hiking socks. Check toe clearance on a slope and heel movement while walking. Lace the boots securely without using excessive tightening to compensate for the wrong size or volume.
Walk in a setting compatible with the seller’s return policy before taking them on a long trip. A short indoor fitting is not a durability or trail-performance test, but it can reveal obvious fit problems while you still have options.
If this platform is substantially different from your usual footwear, introduce it conservatively rather than making a demanding trip the first full day of use. Do not interpret zero drop as a medical benefit or a universally preferable design.
Our trail-runners versus boots guide helps compare the broader choices. A familiar shoe that fits the route can be better than an unfamiliar boot selected for an attractive feature list.
Keep waterproofing separate from all-weather performance
Waterproof construction is useful information, but water entering over the collar is a different route of entry. Think about puddle depth, stream crossings, precipitation, and how you will manage damp socks. Do not treat a membrane claim as permission to ignore the rest of the trip plan.
Consider drying and temperature as practical questions. A waterproof boot may suit some routes while a different footwear approach better matches another trip. We have not independently measured water resistance, drying speed, traction, or breathability for the Outlander.
Inspect the upper, seams, tread, and laces before departure, and follow the maker’s care instructions. Do not improvise treatments merely because they worked on a different leather boot.
What individual owners report
On the Lems customer-review page, Christian D. describes comfort, while Andrew reports positive traction and comfort but difficulty keeping the laces tightened. These are individual accounts, not a representative survey or our measurements. The page also contains an AI-generated summary, which we do not treat as independently verified testing.
The useful response is to check heel fit and whether the actual lacing arrangement stays secure during a home trial. Do not assume every unit has a lacing problem, or that a favorable reviewer’s foot shape predicts your experience.
Our buying assessment
Consider the Outlander if the last fits your feet, its platform suits your accustomed footwear, and waterproof construction matches the planned route. Compare a non-waterproof trail shoe when that better fits the trip’s drying and carrying needs, or a different boot when heel security or midfoot fit is wrong.
