The Helikon-Tex Supertarp is an open-shelter option for campers who want flexible coverage and are willing to plan the pitching system. It is not automatically a complete replacement for an enclosed tent. Consider how you will create support, manage weather entering from the sides, and keep sleeping equipment protected before choosing it for an overnight trip.

Helikon-Tex Supertarp: identify the full-size polyester model
The official US Supertarp listing identifies part number PO-STP-PO, 3-by-3-meter dimensions, polyester composition, and 19 attachment points. It lists 1.85 pounds. These figures describe that model; do not transfer them to Supertarp Small or a spark-resistant variant. The old article’s nylon description is not supported by this specification reference.
| Coverage question | What to plan |
|---|---|
| Support | Compatible poles or permitted existing supports |
| Ground footprint | Room for the pitch and its guy lines |
| Wind-driven rain | Orientation and the limits of open sides |
| Sleep protection | Separate decisions about ground and insect protection |
Three-by-three meters gives nine square meters of fabric, calculated from the listed dimensions. It does not mean nine square meters of usable dry floor after shaping and pitching the shelter.
Compare the complete shelter kit
Add the support poles, stakes, lines, ground protection, and any insect protection that your trip requires. A fabric-only weight does not establish that the complete tarp system is lighter than a tent.
Decide which supports you can use at the actual campsite. Tree spacing, rules protecting vegetation, and available ground can limit arrangements that look simple in a demonstration. Carry the pieces required for a permitted pitch rather than relying on an ideal pair of trees.
Pack lines so they can be deployed and adjusted without sorting a knot pile after dark. Plan enough space for guy lines without creating obstacles across routes other people need to use.
Choose coverage for the actual routine
An open tarp can provide a shared covered area, but cooking, sleeping, and storing wet equipment have different requirements. Keep the layout appropriate to the activity. Never assume that a covered or partly enclosed position is suitable for a combustion appliance; follow the appliance instructions.
For sleeping, consider which direction rain can enter and where splash or runoff may reach the bedding. The edge of a fabric rectangle is not the edge of a guaranteed weatherproof room. Choose a campsite that makes the intended setup practical rather than asking the tarp to repair poor site selection.
See our shelter selection guide when comparing the tarp with an enclosed tent. Privacy, insects, and quick weather changes may make a tent the better tool even if a tarp offers more flexible daytime coverage.
Practice before depending on it
Set up the intended configuration in advance with the equipment you will carry. Check attachment points, line routing, and whether the sleeping layout fits without brushing wet fabric. Confirm you can adjust the pitch with the clothing and gloves expected on the trip.
Practice lowering or changing the arrangement without improvising unsafe loads on supports. Inspect damaged stitching, fabric wear, and unsuitable stakes before departure. We have not tested this tarp’s storm performance or measured its water resistance.
Keep the care instructions specific to the material. Fully dry the fabric and lines before long-term storage rather than leaving a wet bundle packed until the next trip.
Our buying assessment
Consider the full-size Supertarp for a clearly defined covered-space or tarp-camping role, with a complete support kit and a suitable campsite. Compare an enclosed tent when insect protection, privacy, and a more contained sleeping layout matter. Compare a smaller tarp only if its reduced coverage actually fits the job.
Before buying, confirm model identity and total kit weight, then plan the full pitch. The backpacking packing guide can help identify accessories that a fabric-only comparison overlooks.
